Chapter 3:
Happy Birthday to Me!
May came around, and in the spirit of celebrating my birthday, I decided to buy a car. Mainly because the thought of having an emergency crossed my mind, however, I was willing to push it till the end of the year to wait for some good sales. But 5 months, a few bus rides, and Uber rides later, it was evident that a car in Jacksonville, FL is a necessity. So, a couple of credit approvals later, I became the proud owner of a 2020 Honda CR-V, what an upgrade!
This came with a string attached; in order not to be so tight every month, Mom and I were going to start Dashing for DoorDash. I thought being a Dasher would be a good source of income for my mom, and we could do it together on the weekends. After all, it’s something she can do on her own schedule at her own pace whenever she’s feeling ok. We quickly realized that the stairs would be an issue for her, but we made it work. Driving in pairs to strangers’ houses is safer anyway. Since May, we’ve dashed to many Jacksonville neighborhoods that we didn’t know where there and I’ve gotten to know the city a lot more. After a few “I told you so” fights with my mom, we got the hang of it and quickly became something to remember us doing together.
Not long after we started our Dasher journey, I started to have hip pain again, which was on and off for a while. I realized that sitting in the car for more than 2 hours wasn’t good, so we changed the way we scheduled our dash so that we wouldn’t be sitting for so long. We were going in and out of the car and I would go up the stairs when it was a necessary so we were not necessarily sitting for long. But the hip pain didn’t give up so I scheduled a follow up with the doc.
